The First Kennel Club in Georgia
|
We serve the community of Dog lovers in greater Atlanta by sponsoring Dog shows, Obedience, Agility, and Rally. We are also committed to sponsoring scholarships at the University of Georgia Veterinary School.
OUR PAST...The Atlanta Kennel Club is an all-breed dog club. It has served the dog fancy in metro Atlanta, Georgia since 1900. Its mission is to promote, advance and protect the interests of purebred dogs and to encourage good sportsmanship at all purebred events as recognized by the American Kennel Club, and to educate the fancy, government and the public regarding responsible dog ownership. The Atlanta Kennel Club is a member of the American Kennel Club.
OUR PRESENT...Today, we serve communities from Alpharetta to Palmetto, Lithonia to Marietta, Stone Mountain to Mableton, giving dog fanciers in the entire metro area a club to call their own. Members meet monthly for dinner and an informative speaker. We sponsor two major dog shows annually which attract over 3000 entries each.
OUR FUTURE...The Atlanta Kennel Club invites you to join with us in our love of Dogs and the Sport of Dogs. Visit our meetings, which are open to the public, and above all, come to our Dog Shows! There you will find the finest dogs of every breed - and their enthusiastic owners. We love our dogs, and love having fun with our dogs!

So What Are Dog Shows All About?
|
Showing dogs is a great sport where the thrill of competition is combined with the joy of seeing beautiful dogs. Dog shows are one of many types of AKC dog events in which AKC-registered dogs can compete. These events, which draw nearly two million entries annually, include dog shows and tests of instinct and trainability, such as obedience trials, Canine Good Citizen tests, field trials, agility trials, lure coursing, rally, hunting tests, herding trials, tracking tests, coonhound and earthdog events.
Dog shows (conformation events) are intended to evaluate breeding stock. The size of these events ranges from large all-breed shows like ours, with over 3,000 dogs entered, to small specialty club shows, featuring a specific breed. The dog's conformation (overall appearance and structure), an indication of the dog's ability to produce quality puppies, is judged.
